Philodendron Moonlight
A compact, self-heading philodendron whose new leaves open an electric chartreuse before ripening to lime green. It stays under two feet, needs no support, and glows in a dim corner where darker plants disappear.
Moonlight is the brightest green thing you can put on a shelf. Each new leaf unfurls a fluorescent yellow-green that looks lit from inside, then slowly matures to a soft lime. Because it is always making new leaves, there is always one glowing.
It is a self-heading hybrid, so it forms a neat clump about knee height and never needs a pole or pruning. Care is standard easy philodendron: bright filtered light, water when dry, and leave it alone. It pairs well with darker plants, which is exactly what it was bred for.
Light
Bright, indirect light for the strongest colour. It copes with medium light and even a bright north window, but the new leaves come in a duller green. Direct sun bleaches the chartreuse to yellow and can scorch. An east window is perfect.
Water
Water when the top two inches are dry, roughly weekly in summer and every twelve days in winter. Moonlight droops dramatically when thirsty and perks up within an hour of watering, so it is hard to underwater by accident. Overwatering is the real risk: soggy soil yellows the lower leaves.
Soil and potting
A chunky aroid mix with bark and perlite. Repot every eighteen months, one size up. It stays compact, so it rarely needs a pot bigger than eight inches.
Feeding
Half-strength balanced feed every four weeks in spring and summer. Pale new growth that stays pale can mean it is hungry; a feed brings the colour back.
Propagation
Division of the clump when repotting, or basal offsets once the plant is mature. Cuttings do not work the way they do for vining types.
In a hot, dry home
Comfortable in a dry home. The leaves are thick enough not to crisp at forty percent humidity, and it tolerates warm rooms. Keep it out of the vent's direct path, and water a couple of days sooner in July and August. The chartreuse holds well in the bright, filtered light of a desert house.
Problems and fixes
New leaves pale yellow rather than chartreuse
Likely cause: Too much sun
Fix: Move it a few feet back from the window.
New leaves plain green
Likely cause: Not enough light
Fix: Brighter, filtered spot.
Lower leaves yellow and soft
Likely cause: Overwatering
Fix: Let the soil dry deeper between waterings.
Brown leaf edges
Likely cause: Fertiliser burn or very dry air
Fix: Flush the pot with water, feed at half strength, raise humidity a little.
Philodendron Moonlight questions
How big does Philodendron Moonlight get?
About twenty inches tall and two feet wide. It is one of the smaller self-heading philodendrons.
Why did the bright colour fade?
Each leaf fades from chartreuse to lime as it ages. Only the newest leaves glow. If none are glowing, it needs more light.
Is Moonlight safe for pets?
No. Toxic to cats and dogs if chewed.
