Philodendron Birkin
Compact, upright, and pinstriped: dark green leaves with fine cream lines like a tailored suit. A self-heading philodendron that stays neat on a shelf and is one of the easiest of the collector plants.
Birkin appeared as a mutation on a Rojo Congo philodendron and became one of the most popular new plants of the decade. It does not climb or trail; it grows as a neat rosette of striped leaves that gets slowly bigger, which makes it perfect for a desk or shelf.
The striping varies leaf to leaf, and it occasionally throws a red-tinged or plain green leaf, which is its parentage showing.
Light
Bright indirect light for the strongest striping. It tolerates medium light with plainer leaves. Direct sun scorches it.
Water
Water when the top inch or two is dry, about weekly in summer and every twelve days in winter. It is forgiving but dislikes soggy soil.
Soil and potting
A chunky, well-draining aroid mix. It grows slowly; repot every eighteen months.
Feeding
A half-strength balanced feed monthly in spring and summer.
Propagation
Division of a mature plant, or stem cuttings from an older, leggier specimen. Slower than vining philodendrons.
In a hot, dry home
One of the more tolerant collector plants for a dry home. Forty percent humidity is enough; group it with other plants and keep it out of vents. A good first rare plant here.

Fix: Raise humidity slightly; use filtered water.
Philodendron Birkin questions
Is Philodendron Birkin easy to care for?
Yes. It is one of the easiest collector plants: bright indirect light, water when the top inch is dry, and it stays compact.
Why is my Birkin growing a red or plain green leaf?
Its parent is a red-stemmed Rojo Congo, and it occasionally throws back to it. Cut back to a striped leaf if it keeps happening.
Is Philodendron Birkin toxic to cats?
Yes. Calcium oxalate crystals irritate the mouth.
