Beetle Peperomia
Small oval leaves striped like a beetle shell, dark green with lighter ribs, on trailing red stems. A tough, pet-safe hanging peperomia that tolerates lower light than most and dries out between waterings.
Beetle peperomia gets its name from the leaves: small, oval, dark green with three or four pale stripes running lengthwise, like the wing cases of a beetle. They grow in pairs along thin red stems that trail over the edge of a pot, and a full plant looks like a mat of tiny striped shields.
It is one of the tougher trailing peperomias. It tolerates lower light than the succulent types, dries out between waterings without complaint, and roots wherever a stem touches soil. Safe for pets and small enough for any shelf.
Light
Medium to bright, indirect light. A north or east window suits it; it will also grow under decent room lighting a few feet from a window. Bright light makes the stripes sharper and the growth denser. Direct sun scorches.
Water
Let the top inch or two dry out, then water and drain. About every nine days in summer, every two weeks or so in winter. It is more tolerant of drying than of soggy soil; rotting stems at the base are the usual failure.
Soil and potting
A light, airy mix with perlite or bark, in a small pot with drainage. Repot every two years, one size up. It fills a shallow, wide pot nicely.
Feeding
Half-strength balanced feed every six weeks in the growing season.
Propagation
The easiest of the peperomias. Stem cuttings root in water or mix in two to four weeks, and stems pinned to the soil surface root at every node.
In a hot, dry home
Comfortable in a dry home. It is unfussy about humidity and tolerates heat. Keep it out of the AC's direct path and water when the top inch dries, which will be weekly in the hottest weeks. A good pick for a shady corner in a bright, dry house.
Problems and fixes
Stems rotting at the base
Likely cause: Overwatering
Fix: Dry it out and re-root healthy stem tips.
Sparse, stretched stems
Likely cause: Too little light
Fix: Brighter spot; pin cuttings back into the pot to thicken it.
Leaves dull, stripes faint
Likely cause: Low light
Fix: Move closer to a window.
Leaves dropping
Likely cause: Cold or draft
Fix: Keep it warm and away from vents.
Beetle Peperomia questions
Is beetle peperomia pet safe?
Yes. Non-toxic to cats and dogs.
Does it need bright light?
No. It is one of the more shade-tolerant peperomias and is fine in a north window or medium room light.
How do I make it fuller?
Trim the trailing stems and push the cuttings back into the pot. They root at the nodes and the plant thickens up in a couple of months.
