Alocasia Dragon Scale
Leaves textured like reptile skin, with raised silver-green scales and dark veins. One of the most striking jewel alocasias, it wants sixty percent humidity, an airy mix and a warm spot, and it goes dormant if it does not get them.
Dragon Scale looks unreal in person: the leaf surface is raised and textured like scales, silvery green with deep-set dark veins. It is a compact plant from the Borneo rainforest floor and it wants exactly that: warm, humid, shaded and never soggy.
Alocasia Silver Dragon is a close relative with paler leaves and the same care.
Light
Bright indirect light, softened. An east or bright north window. Direct sun scorches it. Medium light is tolerated but slows growth.
Water
Water when the top two inches are dry, weekly in summer and every two weeks in winter. Never mist the leaves. It rots easily and shows it late; lean dry.
Soil and potting
A very airy mix of bark, perlite and a little coir. Small pot. Repot every couple of years, an inch up.
Feeding
A quarter-strength balanced feed every six weeks in spring and summer.
Propagation
Corms from the soil, sprouted in damp sphagnum in a warm bright spot.
In a hot, dry home
A cabinet plant here. It needs sixty to eighty percent humidity and warm nights, and dry air brings spider mites within weeks. In a glass cabinet with a small fan and a humidifier it thrives; on a shelf it declines.

Alocasia Dragon Scale questions
How much humidity does Alocasia Dragon Scale need?
Sixty to eighty percent. In a dry home that means a glass cabinet or a humidifier close by.
Why does my Dragon Scale keep getting spider mites?
Dry air. Alocasias are magnets for mites when humidity is low. Raise humidity and check the leaf undersides weekly.
Is Alocasia Dragon Scale toxic to pets?
Yes. Calcium oxalate crystals irritate the mouth.
